I am traveling to Taiwan to make a sculpture. I will be posting about my experiences.
Description of sculpture
The work I will create a will be reminiscent of multiple child’s “tops” and prayer wheels. Multiple spinning forms will be made out recycled material, and the cylindrical forms will be arranged on, five by five foot wide plinth. The heights where the cylindrical forms are placed will range from one foot high to six feet in height. The cylindrical forms will be approximately the same size and each will be a self-contained piece allowing limitless arrangement of these forms and streamlining the fabrication process. When a viewer spins the cylinder this action will transform the viewer to participant. The participants energy will be captured using a permanent magnet motor l that will collect the energy from the spinning motion and store the energy in capacitors until it reaches a predetermined level where this energy will be discharged in an explosion of vivid waves of light from pulsing LED lights. Each wheel will have a different combination of lighting colors and arrangements.
Manufacturing relies on turning raw materials into consumer goods. Utilizing materials and resources associated with manufacturing in the sculpture will engage the viewer to consider the meaning behind the choices of materials used. The disintegration of these structures and materials are replaced with a moment of light. As the beams of light are expelled they will create evidence of humankinds participation and agency in the process of manufacturing.
This work will be shown in Taipe then shipped to Vancouver as part of the 2010 cultural olympidad, part of the 2010 olympics, installed on grandville street a pedestrian mall in downtown vancouver coencieding with the Asian lunar celebration showcasing the diverse cultures of Vancouver.
Miss ya, hon! Good luck with everything!
